Century manor
(East house)

The original Ontario Hospital infirmary was built 1896. The distinctive tower square spire roof and broad open veranda's facing south were hallmarks of this building which became in 1933 the nurse’s residence. The hospital established a school for nurses in 1902 with a curriculum that included a 2 yr course in anatomy, surgery, physiology, therapeutic and general nursing. In 1909 the training school of nurses was established with a 3 yr course and graduated over 240 nurses by the time it closed in 1953. The school also provided psychiatric training for nurses from other city hospital, it was torn down about 1960.

THE INFIRMARY

With the asylum housing so many patients, It had it's own fire brigade as seen in the photo on the right. The fire brigade is shown in front of East House, an acute facility built in 1884. The Brigade saw action on the night of august 1 1911, When one of the wings of the Barton building caught fire. the blazing roof of the Asylum perched on the mountainside attracted the attention of the entire city. The cry, "The Asylum is on fire!" rang through the streets, and hundreds flocked up the hill.
Fire Brigade
East House built in 1884 for the care of chronic  patients. It is now called Century manor, it is the last of the original buildings on the HPH grounds.
